What you'll do
Get to know the city of Palermo, its history is evident in its elegant avenues and baroque palaces. Its culture shows a chaotic and captivating city at the same time. This excursion, especially for cruise passengers, begins in the port of Palermo where the guide, identified with a sign, will be waiting for you.
Palermo has been the protagonist of the beginning of the Mediterranean civilization and was once considered one of the most beautiful cities in Europe. This walking tour will show you a piece of the history of the city which passed through the domain of the Phoenicians, Greeks, Carthaginians, Romans, Arabs and Normans. Each colony left its mark on the famous monuments.
The first stop will be the beautiful Piazza Cuatro Canti, a square that is the meeting point of two of Palermo's main thoroughfares: Corso Vittorio Emmanuele and Via Maqueda. Here, you will be captivated by the facades of its four baroque palaces, the lower part of each of the palaces has a sculpture which represent the four seasons.
From the square, we will then continue our excursion to see the Fontana Pretoria, a Tuscan-style fountain also nicknamed “the fountain of shame” (della Vergogna). It is named this way because of the different figures that adorn it and splash around showing its nudity.
We continue to Piazza Bellini, the heart of the city. Here we are going to be able to appreciate the facades of the Church of the Martorana, and of the Church of San Cataldo (both temples with outside visits due to the liturgical celebration).
The last stop on our Palermo tour before returning to the cruise will be the regal Palermo Cathedral which stands out for its heterogeneous style,since it was once a church, mosque and church again. Architecturally formed by Arab, Gothic and Baroque elements.
At the end of the excursion, we will return to the port for the farewell.
