PISA
We will begin our tour at the impressive walls of the ancient city and its religious heart: the Square of Miracles, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the most important medieval art complexes in the world. Here we will admire the famous monumental ensemble formed by the Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta (Duomo), the Baptistery of St. John the Baptist, the Monumental Cemetery, the Bell Tower, and of course, the iconic Leaning Tower of Pisa.
We will continue along Via Santa Maria, the historic artery that once connected the Square of Miracles with the old city. Along this charming street, we will see the Orphan Hospital, the Ferdinandeo College, and the Church of San Giorgio ai Tedeschi, until we reach the Church of San Sisto in Corte Vecchia, where the former Palace of the Lombard Gastaldo stood.
Our walk will then take us to the Piazza dei Cavalieri di Santo Stefano, dominated by its church and the Gualandi Tower, famous for the tragic tale of Count Ugolino, a character immortalized in Dante’s Divine Comedy.
Passing under the arch of the Bonomo Palace, we will continue to Via della Faggiola, known for having been home to the great poet Giacomo Leopardi.
We will end the tour by crossing the Piazza Arcivescovado to return to the Square of Miracles, where you will have some free time to enjoy the surroundings before continuing our journey to Lucca.
LUCCA
We will begin our visit along Via San Paolino, where the birthplace of one of Italy’s most celebrated opera composers, Giacomo Puccini, is located. In nearby Piazza Cittadella, we will admire the statue of the creator of La Bohème, Tosca, Madame Butterfly, and Turandot.
We will then proceed to Piazza San Michele, the ancient Roman forum, where we find the Church of San Michele, a magnificent example of Pisano-Lucchese architecture, and the Palazzo Pretorio (1492), former seat of the Podestà.
Crossing the city’s main square, Piazza Napoleone, we will arrive at the Duomo of San Martino, known for its elegant medieval façade and its enigmatic stone labyrinth.
Our route continues along Via Fillungo, one of Lucca’s most emblematic streets, renowned for its medieval charm, its palaces, and its towers. Here we find the imposing Guinigi Tower, easily recognized by the trees growing at its top.
We will then stroll through the famous Piazza dell’Anfiteatro, one of Italy’s most unique squares, built over the ancient 2nd-century Roman amphitheater, once used for public gatherings and gladiator games.
We will end the visit in front of the Church of San Frediano, distinguished by its spectacular mosaic-decorated façade.
After the visit, you will have some free time before returning to your ship.
