Shore excursion from port of Naples, Italy
- Duration 6h
- Activity level low
What you'll do
Upon the arrival of your cruise at the port of Naples, our guide will be waiting for you at the port, identified with the Shore2Shore sign.
Our visit begins with a panoramic bus tour of Naples. We will travel along the seafront promenade until we reach Posillipo, the highest point in Naples, where the spectacular view of the Gulf of Naples and Vesuvius will offer us exceptional photo opportunities.
We will tour by bus the main points of interest in the city, including Lungomare Mergellina, Castel dell'Ovo, Maschio Angioino (Castel Nuovo), the San Carlo Theatre and the Umberto Gallery, until we reach Piazza Plebiscito; the most important square in the city, where the Basilica of San Francesco di Paola, the Royal Palace, the Palace of Salerno, and the Prefecture Palace are located.
We will leave the bus to discover the city on foot, wandering through the center filled with historic buildings, palaces, churches, banks, theaters, cafés, and numerous exclusive design shops (the bus cannot enter this part of the city).
We will visit La Plaza del Gesù where the Church of Gesù Nuovo is located (exterior visit), the Obelisk of the Immaculate and the Basilica of Santa Chiara (exterior visit), the largest Gothic church in the city. We continue through Piazza San Domenico and the church (exterior), Via Nilo and the Statue of the God Nile, San Gregorio Armeno, San Lorenzo Maggiore...
Finally, we will arrive at Napoli Sotterranea (Underground Naples) to explore Naples from a different perspective, discovering its history and mysteries. The underground network of 280 miles (450 kilometers) was devised by the Greeks in the 4th century BC to build what they then called Neapolis, or "New City." The Romans later used the chambers and tunnels to build aqueducts, which provided water for many centuries to the Neapolitans. As centuries passed, current buildings were constructed over the ancient infrastructure, and the remains of these tunnels became hidden beneath the city.
We return on foot with our guide to the port (approximately 20 minutes), passing through Via dei Tribunali and making a brief stop at the Basilica of San Paolo Maggiore (exterior) to board our cruise again.
