Hike to Pulpit Rock (Preikestolen)

Shore excursion from port of Stavanger, Norway

What you'll do

Our Shore2Shore Excursions guide will meet you at the Stavanger Port where we board an air-conditioned coach to take a guided tour by Pulpit Rock Hide.

Near Stavanger, there is a mysterious rock that rises 600m above the Lysefjord Preikestolen (literally "Pulpit", it is the most famous attraction in Stavanger).

From the top of the imposing Pulpit, spectacular mountain scenery can be seen towards the beautiful fjord. The Pulpit is a spectacular natural rock formation, a 25m x 25m platform, over a beautiful fjord at an altitude of 604m. The fjord is 42km long and is formed by towering glaciers from the last ice age. The Pulpit was probably formed after the thaw, about 10,000 years ago. The mountain tops around the pulpit reach a height of 1000m on both sides of the fjord, offering sensational views.

After a short tour of the city of Stavanger, we will enter the Ryfast Tunnels, Hundvåg (4.5 km long) and the Solbakk Tunnel.

The Solbakk tunnel is the longest and deepest underwater tunnel in the world (14.3 km long) and deepest (292 m below sea level).

After about an hour, we will arrive at the Preikestolen base camp.

Once at the parking lot, located at an altitude of 270 m above sea level, we will start walking along the trail that leads to the top of the rock.

The Lysefjord is 42 km long and a treasure in the Norwegian nature. The glaciers formed the fjord landscape during the last Ice Age, and can be called a canyon. The mountains soar up to 1000 metres (3000 feet) above sea level on both sides of the fjord and some places it ranges as deep in the fjords as height above sea level.

We will follow a well-marked trail from the Pulpit Rock Mountain Lodge through different mountain landscapes. The plateau is wide, flat and you can enjoy a spectacular view of the Lysefjord and surrounding mountains.

We will then return to the Port of Stavanger so you can re-join your cruise ship for onward passage to your next port of call.
