Visit to Guimaraes
Shore excursion from port of Porto, Portugal
- Duration 4h 30min
- Activity level low
What you'll do
Our guide will be waiting for us at the port, identified with the Shore2Shore sign, upon the arrival of your cruise.
After approximately forty-five minutes of travel, we will arrive at Guimaraes, a modern city that has proudly maintained its heritage, preserving its historic architecture (its buildings exemplify the development of Portuguese architecture from the 15th to the 19th century).
First, we will visit the Castle of the Kings; a medieval fortress built in the mid-10th century by order of Countess Mumadona Dias, to protect the town and the monastery from Norman attacks, and we will admire the Palace of the Dukes of Braganza.
We will begin a walking tour of the old city (the best way to appreciate Guimaraes is on foot); we will see shops, stores selling traditional local ceramics and metalwork, corners and narrow streets in the heart of the city. In the main square, we can see the 10th-century Church dedicated to the Virgin Mary, with a beautiful facade adorned with sculptures. Our walk ends at the "Torre da Alfandega", where in large letters we see the words "Aqui nasceu Portugal," which means "Portugal was born here."
We will return to the port for the farewell at the end of the excursion.
