Santiago de Compostela

Shore excursion from port of Vigo or A Coruña, Spain

  • Duration 8h
  • Activity level low

What you'll do

Upon arrival of your cruise, the guide will be waiting for you at the port, identified with the Shore2Shore sign.

We take advantage of this tour to introduce you to the history of Santiago. The Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela is one of the most important Christian pilgrimage sites. Hundreds of thousands of people pilgrimage on foot, horseback, or by bicycle each year to visit the tomb of the Apostle James (one of Christ’s 12 disciples).

Arrival at the Xoán XXIII dock in Santiago de Compostela. Description of the exterior of the cathedral and the main squares that surround it. The Obradoiro, Platerías, and Quintana squares, of Baroque style and 200 years old, further highlight the beauty of the cathedral. Visit inside the Cathedral (subject to unforeseen religious services). Inside are preserved the remains of the apostle. It is a building more than 800 years old and Romanesque in style; evocative of the city’s medieval past. We walk through the main streets of the historic center: the Vilar and Franco streets. On Franco street is the University of Santiago, founded in 1495, as well as most of the tapas and wine bars. Vilar street is typical for its numerous souvenir shops. These shops are located in spectacular buildings from 200 years ago, where we will see the Pilgrims’ Reception Office.

We will have free time to try some of the typical products of Galician cuisine or buy traditional souvenirs of the city.

Return from Santiago to the port for the farewell.
