Valencia City
Shore excursion from port of Valencia, Spain
- Duration 4h
- Activity level low
What you'll do
Upon arrival of your cruise, pick-up by our guide at the port, identified with the Shore2Shore sign.
Our excursion will take us along the old riverbed of the Turia River (today the Turia Garden, with buildings of great interest such as the City of Arts and Sciences and the Palace of Music), with its ancient bridges and the more contemporary ones like Santiago Calatrava’s Peineta and the Flores bridges.
We begin by visiting the facilities of the America’s Cup. Base facilities for the participants of the 32nd edition held in 2007, and the 33rd edition held in February 2010. The “Veles i Vents” building, modernist sheds, inner dock of the port of Valencia, beaches, etc.
We will see where the Formula 1 urban circuit ran along the base of the America’s Cup, the swing bridge (over the new channel), and arrival at the Nazaret neighborhood (5.5 kilometers of route).
We will arrive at the historic center of Valencia and discover the beauty of the main monuments:
The Cathedral: which we can visit on our own during the half-hour break (built in the 13th century, over the great mosque). It does not belong to a single or dominant style. Its languages range from Romanesque to Neoclassical. It houses objects and paintings of great interest such as the Holy Grail, two paintings by Goya, and the Renaissance frescoes of the main altar vault (twelve angels with musical instruments).
The Basilica of the Virgin of the Forsaken: patron saint of the city. Located in the square of the same name, over the forum of Roman Valencia. A baroque construction of great uniqueness. Elliptical plan covered by a dome decorated with frescoes by Antonio Palomino.
The Plaza de la Virgen (foundation of the city and its history, excavations of the Almoina, Water Tribunal, and Generalitat Palace). The Quart Tower (15th century) and The Serrano Towers (14th century). Both towers were used as prisons during the wars.
The Palace of the Marquis of Dos Aguas, National Museum of Ceramics: built in the 15th century and renovated in 1740. Its main alabaster stone façade stands out. It houses the National Museum of Ceramics of Don Manuel González Martí, the Nymphs’ carriage, and the Dresden furniture, a reconstruction of an old Valencian kitchen.
The typical Plaza Redonda: known as “el clot” (the hole), it is one of the most curious interventions of the 19th century. Very close is the Church of Santa Catalina whose construction dates back to the Reconquest. The Tower bell tower, baroque, from the 17th century, is perhaps the most notable part of the complex and offers one of the most beautiful urban perspectives of Valencia thanks to the beauty and lightness of this tower.
The Silk Exchange (Lonja de Mercaderes): we can visit inside for a fee of 1€ per person. It is one of the most representative civil Gothic buildings in Europe, from the 15th century. Declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1996.
The Central Market: modernist style building (1914-1928). It is one of the largest in Europe, exceeding 8,000 m2 of surface area.
During the walking tour we will see some church façades such as those of the Santos Juanes, located within the Barrio del Mercat. This church was considered a second cathedral in importance.
At the end of the excursion, return to the port and farewell.
